Blind Eye to Discrimination Makes Fertile Ground for Antisemitism in France
On February 13, 2006, Ilan Halimi, a twenty-three-year-old French Jew, died soon after he was found near Paris, half-naked, stabbed, and burned with cigarettes and acid. Halimi was kidnapped and tortured because he was a Jew. Virulent antisemitism is still pervasive in France, fueled by extremist movements of the right and Islamist propaganda.

Fire and Broken Glass: The Rise of Antisemitism in Europe
HRF’s 2003 report documents a disturbing pattern of discrimination against Jews in the form of racist threats and violence – including physical assaults on individuals, fire-bombings, gunfire, window smashing, and vandalism of Jewish homes, schools, synagogues and other community institutions. HRF further reports that governments are not accurately reporting or effectively combating antisemitic violence.
